Solskjaer gives Edinson Cavani fitness update ahead of Southampton

Edinson Cavani has resumed training with Manchester United following a lengthy absence ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

The Uruguayan only arrived at Carrington for the first time this summer earlier this week, so he will not face Southampton on Sunday – a team he has fond memories of after a great 9-0 triumph last year.

The striker represented Uruguay in Copa America, and the team advanced to the quarterfinals. Cavani was allowed additional leave by the club for personal reasons.

Mason Greenwood is likely to start upfront for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against the Saints. The boss will not drop the 19-year-old for Anthony Martial a week after he led the line so well last weekend.

“In terms of team news, that has also given us a boost,” Solskjaer remarked, according to the Manchester Evening News. “Edinson has joined in, Raphael has joined in, and we're becoming fitter by the day.

“You'll see on Sunday (if Sancho and Varane play) how hard they've worked. They've got their minutes, we've had a great week, and we'll see who makes the flight down to Southampton on Sunday.

“Edinson has always looked for himself, and, of course, he lacks team training and football training, but he has always looked after himself.

“He had several reasons for arriving late, some of which were personal in nature. And his body can withstand a lot. It wasn't something physical; it was a separate matter.

“He's chomping at the bit, he's eager to train, he's ready to go, and we'll see how much we can get out of him in the beginning.”

Cavani's return will be a huge boost since he is expected to score 20+ goals this season. When you add in Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho, that's a lot of goals.
