After Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Southampton, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer criticizes Fred.

After his own goal in Manchester United's 1-1 Premier League draw at Southampton, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Fred for criticism.

In the season opener against Leeds United, the Brazilian was outstanding. He scored the club's final goal in the 5-1 victory at Old Trafford.

However, he was unable to recreate the performance at St Mary's. In 76 minutes, he was dispossessed 16 times and dribbled past three times.

In the 30th minute, he also let up his own goal. Fred dangled his left foot in front of Che Adams' shot, resulting in a tremendous deflection that beat David de Gea.

After the game, Solskjaer stated that there was a foul on Bruno Fernandes prior to the goal, but he was still critical of Fred's failed interception.

He stated, "It appears that football has gone from one extreme to the other — it's a foul, definitely, 100%."

“However, in football, you don't always get your way. Of sure, we should have reacted differently.

“It was fortunate that it deflected off Fred, but he shouldn't have dangled his leg.

“He ought to have blocked that shot. So when we don't get decisions, we need better reactions.”

From the perspective of a sports photographer:

Solskjaer has frequently shielded his players from criticism, but he was unimpressed by Fred's feeble attempt to block Adams' shot.

Over the last 18 months, the Brazilian has been a regular starter alongside Scott McTominay, but he can't take his spot for granted.

The team is not close to signing a defensive midfielder this summer, but there is speculation that they may do so over the next 12 months.

Fred is one of the players vying for a starting berth. His inconsistency may raise questions about his long-term future at the club.
