Following Solskjaer's appeal to the board, United had a successful transfer window this summer, bringing in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

If Manchester United does not create a credible campaign for major accolades this season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have few excuses.

Since his appointment, the United manager has overseen a gradual rise at Old Trafford, culminating with a second-place finish in the table and a trip to the Europa League final last season.

Those accustomed to seeing United at the top of the table are growing impatient with a lack of trophy, with the penalty shootout loss to Villarreal placing a large question mark over whether Solskjaer is the guy to restore United's glory days.

However, one thing is clear: Solskjaer has the backing of the club's owners, the Glazers, who have once again invested heavily in the playing squad - just as their manager wanted.

Solskjaer told TV2 at the end of last season, "We were the second-best team, but too far behind to threaten the champions." We must fortify ourselves. Naturally, something will happen during the transfer window.

“The world has changed dramatically since 15 or 16 months ago, but we still need to make some moves in the transfer market and with the team.

“It is never feasible to sit back and relax. You're always looking for reinforcements. Because football is a dynamic sport, unforeseen events such as injuries, illness, or someone wishing to relocate can occur.

“I will never sit down and say, ‘The team is now exactly the way I want it to be,' because you always see other players or teams doing something you want.”

Despite the financial impact of Covid-19 limiting spending for the bulk of teams, United has committed to a £115 million outlay to bring in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane - two players capable of propelling Solskjaer's side to the next level.

That is a clear indication of the Glazers' confidence in Solskjaer moving into this season, and it fulfills a promise they made to United fans back in June when they held a fans' forum.

“Our goal is to win every competition in which we compete, and we will continue to spend in our academy and in the transfer market to assist the manager in meeting the club's goals,” Glazer stated.

“We want this club to be successful and win trophies all the time. To compete for awards, a large expenditure is required."

Further additions are still possible, but doubtful unless United can shed any of the many marginal players on their books.

Jesse Lingard's future remains uncertain, despite Solskjaer's assertion that he has a role to play this season, and the midfielder was not even selected for Saturday's opener against Leeds.

Apart from Lingard, Phil Jones and Diogo Dalot are all still at Old Trafford, with United unable to draw interest in players who are mostly thought surplus to needs, though Andreas Pereira now appears to be on his way out before the deadline.

So far, the only exits have been players who have left on loan or on free agency after their contracts had expired.

United's excessive spending even sparked criticism from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who questioned how their rivals could afford to spend so much money in such a difficult economic context.

But, as Joel Glazer pointed out just two months ago, United's excellent performance in increasing revenue off the field was fueling their actions in the transfer market; a strategy that the club intends to maintain.
