‘IT’S CRAZY’: RIO FERDINAND SHARES WHY MANCHESTER UNITED ARE BEHIND TWO PL RIVALS

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United is trailing Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League title battle this season because their roster lacks depth.

Ferdinand addressed why his former club is lagging behind in the Premier League title battle on his FIVE YouTube channel.

This summer, United added Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

However, there is still a sense that more quality acquisitions are needed before United can fully fight for City's crown.

FERDINAND: GIVE MANCHESTER UNITED LADS ‘A BREATHER' At times last season, Solskjaer was prone to fielding nearly the same team in a row.

Of course, why mess with a winning formula?

However, because of the severity of the fixture schedule, maintaining the same high standards without rotation and fresh personnel was impossible.

Chelsea and Manchester City can afford to do this. And it's a strength Ferdinand believes United is now unable to match.

“The difference between Chelsea and Manchester City and everyone else in the league is depth,” remarked the former Manchester United and England defender.

“If you look at their B-teams, they might compete in this league.

“For Chelsea, if (Romelu) Lukaku, (Mason) Mount, and (Kai) Havertz play as a front three, the back-up front three is (Timo) Werner, (Christian) Pulisic, and (Hakim) Ziyech.

“That is insane. Liverpool lacks such depth. Man United lacks that depth. It's insane. That is the distinction.

“I just view those two teams as being a step ahead at the moment - unless Manchester United comes out blazing.

“However, Manchester United will remain a threat. They'll be up there.” RED DEVILS NEED DEPTH The arrival of Sancho relieves some of the pressure on United's frontmen.

Solskjaer, on the other hand, will be without Marcus Rashford for the opening few games of the season as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

Varane can lift a comparable burden off the defense.

But what United actually needs are more bodies in midfield.

Bruno Fernandes showed that he cannot play every week after showing signs of fatigue near the end of the 2020/21 season.

Although Fred and Scott McTominay has individual skills, they are hardly the world-class duo United fans are accustomed to.

There is still time for newcomers to go through the Old Trafford doors — but it is quickly running out.
