The story of Raphael Varane's transfer to Manchester United is now finished. In order to capture the Premier League title next season, the Red Devils have reached an agreement in principle with the France international. As a result, Express Sport will now examine everything he has said about the club and its players throughout the years.
United had a successful summer transfer window in 2011.
Atletico Madrid's David De Gea joined the club, while Aston Villa's Ashley Young and Blackburn Rovers' Phil Jones also joined.
However, things may have gone even better if they had been able to sign Varane.
And, speaking at the time, the France international stated that he had discussed a move to the club with Sir Alex Ferguson before deciding to join Real Madrid instead.
That was down to Zinedine Zidane picking up the phone to try to persuade his compatriot to come to Spain instead.
He explained, "When Zidane called, I begged him to call me back since I was studying for my baccalaureate."
“It was my laid-back personality that caused me to react in that way. To deal with so many things at such a young age, you must be carefree.
“But, to be honest, my mind was elsewhere after that call; it was difficult to concentrate on revising!”
“It was the strangest time of my life: I was preparing for my baccalaureate, the phone was ringing off the hook, I went to the Real facilities, I saw Alex Ferguson... Just image, I was doing examinations and signing autographs for other students.
“It was strange. I'm quite proud of myself for passing.”
Varane was a target for Jose Mourinho in 2016.
And, speaking at the time, the Real Madrid defender acknowledged he found his old boss's interest "flattering."
"Of course it's flattering," he remarked, "since Manchester United is a huge club."
“However, once Madrid and I have agreed on my concept, there are no more questions to be asked.
"I've always claimed I'm happy in Madrid.
“It's difficult to say no to Jose Mourinho, but you have to consider the benefits and drawbacks. We're guys, we have to make decisions, and that's the way it is."
Varane will be strutting his thing with Paul Pogba once his agreement is finalized.
And the Real Madrid player is clearly a tremendous supporter of his countryman, having praised him just a year ago.
"I believe we've formed a group. Pogba is a good player, and I'm familiar with him,” he remarked.
"He would be a terrific addition to any squad.""I have faith in my teammates." We'll see if additional players arrive. "I have faith in my teammates."
United has other goals in mind.
Varane isn't anticipated to be United's final signing of the summer.
They also want a right-back, and Kieran Trippier of Atletico Madrid is on their radar.
Trippier wants to return to the Premier League after spending two years in Spain, and United are poised to make a second bid for the England international after having one rejected previously.
Saul Niguez, Eduardo Camavinga, and Declan Rice are all admired in midfield.
However, current rumours imply that Wolves' Ruben Neves is a lot more likely signing.
