According to rumors in France, Manchester United is close to signing Raphael Varane after striking a £38.5 million deal with Real Madrid.

A Manchester United insider told Le Parisien that talks for the 28-year-old were 'rapidly approaching' an agreement.

The two clubs had agreed on the key points of a transaction worth roughly €45 million (£38.5), according to the newspaper.

Varane might make his Old Trafford debut as early as this week.

United had apparently reached an agreement with the France international centre-back to extend his contract until 2026.

In the heart of his defense, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to pair Varane with captain Harry Maguire.

Solskjaer appears to be on track for a successful transfer window, having already addressed their dearth of quality on the right flank with the signing of Jadon Sancho this summer.

Another long-standing weakness was the lack of a central defender to play alongside England's Harry Maguire, with Victor Lindelof unable to match the £80 million man's qualities.

United are now on the verge of bringing in a world-class player in the form of Varane, according to Goal, who has agreed to a five-year contract.

The World Cup winner will earn more money and is eager to join United at Old Trafford, yet his respect for the Spanish champs has kept him from pushing for the move.

Madrid has already lost Sergio Ramos to PSG this summer, and it appears that the club's purge will continue with a player who has been with the club since 2011.

Following the Covid-19 shutdown, Carlo Ancelotti's side is aiming to recoup finances in order to prepare for a Kylian Mbappe bid next summer.
