Man Utd star stance on giving up No 7 shirt for Jadon Sancho explained

Man Utd star stance on giving up No 7 shirt for Jadon Sancho explained

The signing of Jadon Sancho by Manchester United is expected to be completed soon.

According to rumors, Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani would prefer to maintain his No 7 shirt rather than hand it over to Jadon Sancho.

DON'T MISS:

When the Uruguayan arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in October, he was given the jersey. And he did it proud last season, scoring 17 goals across all competitions.

Sancho's transfer to Manchester United has finally been completed. Unless, of course, a medical is required.

The England international has been on their radar since Jose Mourinho attempted to bring him to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window of 2017.

They've finally managed to break Dortmund's resolve after missing out that year, as well as in 2019 and 2020.

Despite prior rumors that he would adopt Cavani's number 7, Express Sport knows that no decision on his shirt number has yet been made.

It's a special number at Old Trafford, having been worn by club luminaries like as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

DON'T MISS:

And Cavani delivered last time out, coming back from a poor start to score 17 goals, including in Villarreal's Europa League final defeat.

The 34-year-old notified Ed Woodward in March that he wanted to go.

However, after receiving more playing time up top, he made a U-turn and decided to stay at the club.

Cavani's starring role coincided with Anthony Martial's injury, which forced the France international to miss the last months of the season.

But he'll still be expected to lead the line on a weekly basis next season as United looks to win their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson took over in 2013.

The club will be hoping that Sancho can make an immediate impression now that he has joined.

Particularly considering how wing wizards have battled at the club since Ferguson's departure eight years ago.

When United signed Angel Di Maria in the summer of 2014, when Louis van Gaal was still in charge, they thought they had a winner on their hands.

Despite this, the Argentina international only stayed at Old Trafford for a year before joining Paris Saint-Germain after struggling to adjust in England.

Memphis Depay was then assigned to him as a replacement.

However, the Netherlands international only lasted 18 months when Mourinho let him go, selling him to Lyon in January 2017

United then signed Alexis Sanchez a year later.

The less said about the Chilean international, the better, especially considering he only scored five goals despite earning £400,000 each week.

Cavani could have been forgiven for requesting a different shirt number instead, given how hard those players were working.

However, in a December interview, Solskjaer stated that he had demanded it from the start.

“When I spoke with him, the first thing he asked me was if he could wear the No 7,” he added.

“Obviously, we're discussing the shirt's history. When you consider his career background and experience, as well as his demeanor from my conversation with him and previous observation of him, there was no doubt in my mind that he could manage the No. 7 shirt.

“He is really conscientious and professional. His habits and everything about him demonstrate why he has had such a successful career.

“Even at his age, he is one of our most physically fit players.”
