For a long time, Paul Pogba's future at Manchester United was uncertain due to concerns about his consistency and rumors that a suitor could tempt him away, but Sport Italia journalist Rudy Galetti reports that United are "close to renewing" his contract, which would be a "record contract" worth €22 million per year (£18.7 million per year).
Pogba's future looks to be in Manchester after the Red Devils were open to selling him for €80 million (£68.2 million) despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain and others. However, no team has made an acceptable offer, and his future now appears to be in Manchester.
DON'T MISS:
The 28-year-old joined United from Juventus in 2016 and has since made 206 appearances across all competitions, scoring 38 goals and assisting 42 times. He's won the Europa League and two League Cups, as well as reaching another Europa League final and two Premier League finals.
However, Pogba's future has been uncertain as his representative, Mino Raiola, continues to tell the press that his client wants to leave United. He believes Pogba wants a change of scenery after five years in France and has launched a "come and get me" plea on his behalf.
The 28-year-current old's contract expires in 2022, so there's a chance he'll go on a free transfer if a contract extension can't be reached, but Galetti's report is encouraging. Pogba is pleased, according to United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, so it appears more likely that he will stay rather than be sold, but this is a story worth following.
Pogba’s deal being up in 12 months means United have a decision to make this summer. They either need to cash in now to avoid the risk of losing him for nothing in 2022, or they need to accelerate talks over a new deal to ensure they’ve got a valuable asset on their books for the long-term.
One of those two things has to happen before the season starts and it seems it will be news of his extension.
