WILL SCOTT MCTOMINAY CHANGE HIS SHIRT NUMBER?

WILL SCOTT MCTOMINAY CHANGE HIS SHIRT NUMBER?

Scott McTominay has revealed why he keeps his shirt number at a pretty high level.

Despite making over 100 first-team appearances and growing in importance, the midfielder was handed the no.39 before making his debut against Arsenal in May 2017 and has retained it ever since.

It's common for Academy graduates to be assigned numbers, though these will typically alter as their status at the club grows.

Marcus Rashford, who wore the number 39 before McTominay, is an excellent example.

We received a slew of queries about the topic ahead of a recent fans' Q&A with the Scotland international.

McTominay, on the other hand, claims to have given the topic absolutely no thought and is content to keep what he has.

“When you first get your number, No. 39 is obviously special,” Scott explained. “No one has ever told me to change my phone number, and I haven't had a single conversation about it. Not three, two, or even a year ago.

“It's never been mentioned before. That's completely great with me. I've never ever considered changing my phone number, let alone asked myself or brought it up in conversation. So 39. I'm completely good. I keep seeing 39 and can't get it out of my head!”

The hardworking and versatile United midfielder was one of the few Reds to stand out in the disappointing UEFA Europa League final against Villarreal, and he is presently training with his national team, which is ready for its first major event in 23 years.

McTominay presently wears the number 4 for Scotland, which may reflect his role at the international level, where he frequently plays in defense at the request of manager Steve Clarke.

Scott said he has no recollections of Scotland's last appearance in summer competition, the 1998 World Cup, and that he can't wait to get started.

He exclaimed, "I was born in 1996!" “Of course, there are expectations when you play international football,” says the player. Everyone is under a lot of pressure to do well.

“It's a free hit for us. We haven't been to the Euros in a long time, so we need to embrace it, take it all in, and perform well.”

Scotland's Euro 2020 campaign kicks off today (14 June) at Hampden Park, where they will face the Czech Republic before facing England four days later in a much-anticipated all-British match.
