Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told no funds available for holding midfielder

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told no funds available for holding midfielder

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will only be able to sign a holding midfielder this summer if he sells players to raise the finances.

Despite Manchester United's desire to sign £77 million right winger Jadon Sancho and £40 – £50 million center-back Raphael Varane, many fans, and commentators believe that the holding midfield position is the one that has to be strengthened the most.

Despite this, according to James Ducker of The Telegraph, the club is unlikely to make money available for this key signing.

'Despite Joel Glazer, United's co-chairman, insisting this month that the club would make "significant" investments in the squad, the coronavirus issue has wreaked havoc on the club's finances,' Ducker argues.

‘Solskjaer would also like a defensive midfielder, but in order for the manager to be able to recruit one, United may have to drastically reduce their pay bill and sell well.'

DON'T MISS:

Solskjaer and the recruiting team clearly believe that a center-back partner for Harry Maguire is more crucial than a defensive midfielder.

Despite this, Victor Lindelof's performances at Euro 2020 so far would have likely put him at the top of the list if he wasn't already a Manchester United player. For many, the Swede has been one of the tournament's top defenders thus far.

United also has Eric Bailly, who can be world-class on his day, and the tremendously talented Axel Tuanzebe as backups, as well as the great prospects Teden Mengi and Will Fish.

However, United's sole specialist holding midfielder is the aging Nemanja Matic, who Solskjaer does not start many games with.

As a result, the Red Devils are obliged to play a double pivot with Scott McTominay and Fred, neither of whom is a natural fit for the role and thus must cover the task of a single world-class CDM.

As a result, United will be without one additional attacking midfielder or forward, limiting the formations that the team can use.

West Ham may have handed United a ‘hands off' caution in relation to Declan Rice, the club's rumored first choice for the role, but there are other excellent candidates who will be overlooked if the club's owners do not allocate finances for the position.

Manuel Locatelli of Sassuolo is expected to join Juventus for roughly £34 million, while Arsenal is reportedly closing in on Wolves' Ruben Neves for a similar sum.

United may be able to generate enough money if players like Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, and Diogo Dalot are all rumored to be for sale. However, it is not essential, and at the current rate of spending, United will continue to lag behind Manchester City.
