According to BBC Sport correspondent Simon Stone, Manchester United are close to finalizing a deal to capture goalkeeper Tom Heaton on a free transfer from Aston Villa.

The Red Devils are expected to make a number of new signings this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

DON'T MISS:

When Heaton's contract with Aston Villa expires on July 1, he will become a free agent, and Manchester United is said to be interested in the 35-year-old.

The English goalkeeper didn't play for the Villains last season, but he's now being touted as a target for the Red Devils as they want to bolster their backup options in goal.

Manchester United is close to finalizing a deal to sign the veteran goalkeeper, according to BBC reporter Stone, as they begin their summer spending.

“Manchester United are close to finalizing the return of goalkeeper Tom Heaton,” Stone told BBC Sport.

“At the outset of his career, the 35-year-old spent five seasons with United, despite not making a single first-team appearance.

“Heaton went on to play 377 senior games for a variety of clubs, including Burnley, before joining Aston Villa in 2019.”

DON'T MISS:

“He departed Villa Park at the end of the season and is on a free transfer back to Old Trafford.

“At United this summer, there are some interesting goalkeeping decisions to be made, with David De Gea and Dean Henderson's futures in question.

“Heaton isn't a first-round pick, but his presence adds to the mix.”

Manchester United are trying to bolster their roster this summer in order to construct a team capable of winning the Premier League next season, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Last season, Manchester United finished second, 12 points behind Manchester City.
