Manchester United are interested in signing Real Madrid star Raphael Varane during the summer transfer window.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid star Raphael Varane intends to reject a new contract offer from Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

 DON'T MISS:

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the France international a decade ago. And it appears that a move to Old Trafford is finally in the works.

Real Madrid lured Varane away from United ten years ago, with Zinedine Zidane enticing his compatriot to Spain.

Ferguson was enraged because he believed France international would be the ideal long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand.

And, in the years since, United has come to regret not bringing Varane to the club.

During his time at the Bernabeu, the 28-year-old has won four Champions League titles, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the world.

Real Madrid has been keen to sign Varane to a new contract, as his current deal in the Spanish capital is set to expire next summer.

But, according to ABC, the 2018 World Cup winner is on his way out because he intends to reject their offer of an extension.

DON'T MISS:

According to reports, he has a better offer from United, who are willing to pay him "much more money" over the next five years.

Real Madrid want around £60 million to let their prized asset go, but United may try to haggle that down given he'll be available for nothing in a year.

Carlo Ancelotti has been named as the club's new manager, succeeding Zinedine Zidane for a second spell in charge of Los Blancos.

However, in a 2017 interview, Varane appeared to criticize the former Everton manager for the way he treated him during their time together.

"I've improved since he left. “I could have played more under him if I could have demonstrated to him that he could rely on me in difficult times,” he said.

"There was less turnover, and you really needed to bring the house down if you wanted to play again. That was something I couldn't do.”

If United pay Real Madrid's asking price, Varane will become the club's fourth most expensive signing of all time.

Paul Pogba currently leads the way, with the club paying £89 million to sign the France international during the 2016 summer transfer window.

Next on the list is Harry Maguire, who cost the Red Devils a whopping £80 million when he arrived from Premier League rivals Leicester City two years ago.

And third is Romelu Lukaku, who cost Manchester United £75 million to entice away from Everton during Jose Mourinho's tenure as manager.

Gary Neville, speaking before United's defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League final, urged his team to pursue players of Varane's caliber.

"If Manchester United wins on Wednesday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have had a really good season, demonstrating great progress,” he said.

"When you talk about recruitment, you're referring to Varane, Kane, Haaland, and Sancho.

“You know who the players are who can take them to the next level. Because there would be more players in those attacking areas, they would become more exceptional in front of goal.

"Then, at the back, a player who, along with [Harry] Maguire, could be there for three or four years and would really challenge and put United at the forefront of challenging City and Liverpool.

"But Solskjaer will have to go above and beyond because [Thomas] Tuchel, [Pep] Guardiola, and [Jurgen] Klopp are all exceptional winning managers who are hungry and ruthless.

"They want to win all the time, so Manchester United can't think that if they win the Europa League on Wednesday and finish second, they don't need to move up a level.

"They are still 12 points behind City; they must win four games in a row, which is not easy.

"So United have to do big things this summer, and Wednesday is such a big moment in the club's history for Solskjaer and these players to get a medal around their necks."
