Manchester United desperately need a centre back, possibly two, but for the time being, they must find a suitable partner for Harry Maguire, and Conor Clancy, editor in chief of Forza Italian Football, believes Cristian Romero is the ideal signing.
Romero spent the season on loan at high-scoring, possession-based Atalanta, where he has improved with each passing game and even won the Serie A MVP award for defenders.
Man United already have Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, and Victor Lindelof, but now that they have been linked with Romero, it would make sense for them to prioritize that position and spend big money on him.
The Argentine appears to have everything Man United is looking for in a center back and someone who could eventually complement Maguire, and Clancy exclusively told This Is Futbol what Man United would get if they signed him:
“He has been phenomenal, winning the MVP award for the best defender in Serie A, but he is one of the league's most deceptively dirty players. When he has the ball, however, his distribution and passing are superb.
“Romero can perfectly pick out a 50-yard pass onto the foot of a striker, but it goes unnoticed because his defensive work is so good and he is a top, top defender.”
Atalanta had another fantastic season, finishing third in Serie A and qualifying for the Champions League for the second time in a row.
Atalanta have now scored 188 goals in two seasons, after scoring 98 goals in 2019/20 and 90 goals last season despite losing Alejandro Gomez to Sevilla in January.
