In the summer transfer window, Cristiano Ronaldo might return to Manchester United.
With the summer transfer window being open, Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Manchester United. According to reports, the Juventus star has been offered a two-year contract to return to Old Trafford, but the 36-year-old is unwilling to decrease his wage demands. With that in mind, it's time to turn back the clock and examine his shirt number requirement from when he initially came.
United had lost David Beckham in 2003.It was a slap in the face for the Red Devils, who had hoped to sign Ronaldinho as a potential replacement.
When United learned that Ronaldinho would be joining Barcelona, they were compelled to rethink their strategy. And it was while on a pre-season tour that they discovered their remedy.
When Ronaldo was playing for Sporting Lisbon, he terrorized the team and gave them the runaround. And it was this that led the Red Devils' top brass to take action in the end.
United signed the teenager, paying £13 million to bring him to Old Trafford and gave him the No 7 shirt used by David Beckham, George Best, and Eric Cantona.
Ronaldo, on the other hand, later disclosed that he had wanted the No. 28 jersey, which he wore at Sporting.
“I was in Manchester at the start of my career. When I first arrived at Manchester United, I requested number 28 because it was the same as the number I had at Sporting "he stated
“No, you're not going to wear 28, you're going to wear No 7,” Sir Alex Ferguson told me.
“I was terrified, a little scared, since I knew Beckham had worn that garment previously.
“But I said OK, I'll take the challenge, and it's been my lucky number ever since. Because it was with that shirt that I won everything in football. It's a lucky number for me.
“It was amazing; it [No.7] came with additional responsibilities.
“It was the start of my football success, and it was perhaps one of the most beautiful moments of my career thus far.
"Everything I own is made up of the number 7, thus this is the tale of the number seven at the start of my career, and this is the number I adore."
If Ronaldo is re-signed by United, he may not be given the No. 7 shirt that has become synonymous with him over the years.
That's because it's now taken by Edinson Cavani, who, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, demanded it when he first arrived at the club a year ago.
“He is still one of our fittest players,” said Solskjaer, who signed the striker to a one-year deal with a one-year extension option.
“For the time being, it appears that he has a few years left in him. When he came here, he had a huge influence, a huge impact. He still has a few years to live.
“We have a lot of competition for spots, but he'll likely start more games than he won't. He is unquestionably a starter.
You don't put a player of that caliber in any other category. I have faith in him and my players.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo looked to bid Juventus farewell in a recent social media post.
He stated, " "Any great player's life and career are full of ups and downs.
“Year after year, we face amazing teams with extraordinary players and lofty goals, so we must always give it our all to maintain our superiority.
"We were unable to win Serie A this season; however, congratulations to Inter on their well-deserved triumph. However, I must respect everything we accomplished at Juventus this season, both collectively and individually.
"The Italian Super Cup, Italian Cup, and Serie A Top Scorer trophy provide me joy, particularly because of the hardship they entail in a country where nothing is simple to win."
With these accomplishments, I achieved a goal I had set for myself since the day I arrived in Italy: to win the Championship, Cup, and Super Cup, as well as to be named Best Player and Top Scorer in this fantastic football country filled with incredible players, massive clubs, and distinct football culture.
"I've already stated that records pursue me rather than the other way around. For those who aren't sure what I'm talking about, it's simple: football is a team sport, yet we assist our teams to achieve their objectives by conquering obstacles individually.
"It is only by constantly seeking more and more on the field and working more and more off the field that records and collective titles arise, some as a logical result of the other.
"So, this fact, which has been widely duplicated in recent days, makes me very proud: Champion in England, Spain, and Italy; Cup winner in England, Spain, and Italy; Super Cup winner in England, Spain, and Italy; best player in England, Spain, and Italy; best scorer in England, Spain, and Italy; best player in England, Spain, and Italy; best player in England, Spain, and Italy; In England, Spain, and Italy, he has scored over 100 goals for clubs.
"Nothing compares to knowing that I've had an impact in the countries where I've played, and that I've brought joy to the supporters of the clubs I've represented.
"This is what I strive for, what motivates me, and what I will continue to pursue till the end of my days.
"Thank you to everyone who joined us on this adventure! We are all in this together!"
