£60m star wants to join Man Utd on £21m-a-year deal despite Chelsea offer

£60m star wants to join Man Utd on £21m-a-year deal despite Chelsea offer

According to the Independent, Raphael Varane wants to join Manchester United on a £400,000-a-week deal after leaving Real Madrid this summer.

Varane has been at Madrid for ten years, having come from Lyon in 2011, and has established himself as one of Europe's greatest center-backs in recent seasons. With 360 appearances for Madrid, the Frenchman has helped the Spanish giants win a slew of trophies, including four Champions Leagues and three La Liga crowns.

DON'T MISS:

Varane's future at the Bernabeu, on the other hand, is in serious doubt. His current contract expires in a year, and The Athletic claimed earlier this week that the defender had turned down a two-year extension offer.

Real Madrid is becoming increasingly resigned to losing the 28-year-old, knowing that they will have to sell him this summer rather than risk losing him for free in a year if he does not sign a new contract shortly.

The issue has piqued the interest of a number of Europe's elite teams, according to the Mirror, who cite a report from the Spanish tabloid ABC's print edition claiming Man Utd, Chelsea, and PSG had all made approaches to the defender.

Chelsea are apparently looking for a long-term successor for Thiago Silva, who turns 37 this year, and it appears the Blues are interested in bringing Varane to Stamford Bridge.

DON'T MISS:

Chelsea, on the other hand, may be out of luck, as the Independent reports that Varane wants to join Manchester United after concluding it's time to move on from Real Madrid at this point in his career.

Varane is United's main defensive target, according to the tabloid, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeks a world-class partner for Harry Maguire amid concerns over Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

Varane is asking a £400,000-a-week contract, which works out to roughly £21 million per year, according to the Independent, and United may be hesitant to satisfy those demands after being stung in the past by providing enormous contracts to players like Alexis Sanchez.

The Manchester giants may make an exception to sign a world-class centre-back in his prime, but even if they match Varane's wage demands, they'll still have to agree on a deal with Madrid, who are said to value the player at approximately £60 million, according to the Daily Mail.

That seems like a lot of money for a defender who is about to enter the final year of his contract and is refusing to sign an extension, so Man Utd will almost certainly try to negotiate it down.

We'll have to wait and watch how things progress, but any prospective move is unlikely to materialize anytime soon, since Varane is presently at the Euros, helping France book a last-16 match against Switzerland.
