The Hut Group becomes first sponsor to pull out of Man United deal due to protests

Manchester United supporters' #NotAPennyMore movement, which aimed to target the club's backers in defiance of the Glazer family's control, has now yielded results, with a potential business partner cancelling a £200 million training kit contract.

According to The Observer, the Hut Group has cancelled the contract, which was set to begin in July, leading to ‘concerns regarding the supporters' movement to boycott the club's business partners in defiance of the Glazers' control.

According to the paper, United's managing director, Richard Arnold, was told of the decision on Friday.

‘The branding of Myprotein, a Cheshire company operated by THG, was set to feature on United's training kit to supplement the branding of AON, supporters of the club's Carrington training centre,' reports reporter Jonathan Wilson.

THG, a multibillion-pound corporation with headquarters near Manchester Airport, is said to have been worried that as a small enterprise, it will be threatened by disgruntled fans in Greater Manchester.

‘AON's contract ends on 30 June, which means United may fail to reach a new agreement of comparable value to that proposed with THG.'

If United supporters still wanted evidence that their efforts will have an effect, this is it. The sponsor boycott and derogatory advertising movement produced immediate effects and have the ability to be the most successful method of targeting the Glazer family where it hurts – in their wallets.

Meanwhile, protection around the Carrington training centre is being beefed up over concerns that fans will want to push their way in again, according to The Mail on Sunday.

The outlet says that a modern, more intimidating barrier has been built at the entrance to their Carrington training centre, and the number of security guards has been nearly tenfold increased to the sum on duty last month.'

‘United have been forced to respond in response to escalated threats from fans considering a second rally before Thursday's rescheduled match against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
