Roy Keane unhappy with final Edinson Cavani contract decision at Man Utd

Roy Keane unhappy with final Edinson Cavani contract decision at Man Utd

Edinson Cavani promising to remain at Old Trafford, according to Manchester United legend Roy Keane, maybe "a simple path out" for the club's founders. Cavani's deal with United expires at the end of the season, and his father has reportedly said that the forward would like to move to South America.

However, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed confidence that Cavani will stay, telling reporters after United's 6-2 Europa League victory over Roma: "Edinson had been out for seven months and hadn't played football in a long time until he came to us."

DON'T MISS:

"He's had a lot of injuries and has tried very hard to demonstrate his talent."

"He understands my emotions, he understands that I would love to see him for another year; we've talked about it."

"I appreciate how tough this year has been for him, but I promised him that Old Trafford and Manchester are separate places with fans in the stadium."

"I'm trying my hardest, nights like this [help], hopefully, we'll get to the final, and hopefully he'll see himself staying here for another year."

"We don't have to sell him the club. It's about the feeling he gets as he walks into training every day, the atmosphere we've developed, and the team he's a member of.

DON'T MISS:

"He needs to know what it's like to score goals in front of people at the Stretford End; it's a different experience."

"We have the greatest supporters, and there is no greater feeling as a goalscorer than winning and cheering in front of them."

Cavani has been convinced to remain at Old Trafford, according to TNT Sports Argentina, and is expected to sign a two-year contract.

However, Keane believes United should now recruit a new forward, arguing that the veteran forward would not "return Man United to winning league titles."

"Cavani is a fair point, so I sort of hope in one way they don't hold him," Keane said on Sky Sports. Because they can look at it and decide, 'We don't need to go out and get another striker.' It might be a convenient way out.

"He's 34 years old. If you're counting on Cavani to return Manchester United to winning league titles next season, forget it.

"He'd be a back-up striker because he'd rather not be a back-up striker." As a result, he is hesitant to negotiate a new deal. And, of course, his family's explanations."

Keane also said that United would "set a marker down" this summer by bringing in a marquee signing, adding, "Again, I will return to the recruiting."

"I think United, moving forward, ought to make a huge, big signing – whether it's Kane or [Jack] Grealish – to set a marker down." They definitely need another center-half, but I also believe they lack consistency at the top end of the field, as seen by some of the games they've drawn this season.

"They have some brilliant stars, there has been improvement, but the concern for Manchester United is that the next move is the toughest and most difficult one, which is to try and win the league championship." Liverpool was fantastic last season, and Manchester City has been fantastic this season, but United are only a little short."
