Manchester United are expected to resume negotiations with Juan Mata over his future, although the player will have the final say about whether or not to remain at Old Trafford.
Mata's deal ends at the end of next month, and he is yet to sign an extension, despite the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he will be able to have the Spaniard in his team.
The 33-year-old has had a hit-or-miss season, missing a stretch of games in February and March due to injury and illness to his mother, Marta Garcia, who died at the end of March.
Mata had only seen two minutes of Premier League action in almost six months since appearing in a much-changed lineup against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Mata has made 271 appearances for United, but his start against Leicester City was just his fifth this season and his first since November.
However, Solskjaer claimed that Mata's future will be determined by his desire to play first-team football away from Old Trafford.
"I've continued the conversation going with Juan, and we'll talk again shortly. Of course, he hasn't had as much playing time as he would like, and that is a choice we will make for him "Solskjaer said.
"He's in control of his own future; he's been such a strong servant for the club, so it's difficult to leave good players and good people out of the side, and it's just what he wants to do next in his career. Is he going to finish his career here or anywhere else? We have not yet reached a definitive call."
United reportedly agreed to a one-year deal extension with striker Edinson Cavani, 34. The two remaining senior players out of contract this summer are goalkeepers Lee Grant and Sergio Romero, all of whom are likely to depart the team.
Mata has been able to speak with foreign clubs since January and has lately been linked with a transfer to Lazio.
