Manchester United fans blame Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Europa League final defeat

On Twitter, some Manchester United fans chastised manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the club's Europa League final loss to Villarreal last night.

The Red Devils were considered the favourites for the game, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances until Gerard Moreno scored for Villarreal in the 29th minute.

After 55 minutes, Edinson Cavani equalized for United, but they were unable to find a winner in the remaining minutes of normal time.

Unai Emery's team dominated possession in extra time, and the game eventually went to a penalty shoot-out, which they won.

The shoot-out ended in a tie after both teams converted ten penalty kicks. It came down to the goalkeepers, and David de Gea's attempt was blocked.

Solskjaer surprised everyone by not using the bench until the 100th minute when Mason Greenwood was replaced by Fred.

DON'T MISS:

From the 115th minute, he made four more changes, and the emphasis appeared to be on the shoot-out rather than finding the winner in regulation time.

The United manager stuck with Marcus Rashford, who was suffering from an ankle injury and wasn't having the best of games.

He could have used Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo to freshen up the attack, but he chose not to use the sixth substitute allowed in extra time.

De Gea has been a fantastic player for United over the years, but he had yet to save a penalty for the club in the previous 25 attempts.

Dean Henderson could have come on as a late substitute for Solskjaer. The Englishman had saved seven of his previous 19 penalties.

The defeat will be a huge letdown for the fans, and it remains to be seen whether Solskjaer will be retained as manager next season.

He has 13 months left on his current £144,000-a-week contract, but it has been reported that the club has already sanctioned a new one for him.
