Manchester United manager wants the club to sign a new central defender this summer.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes the club should target Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos in the summer transfer window to address their need for a new center-back.

In recent weeks, the 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Chelsea, with Thomas Tuchel reportedly keen to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

United are looking for a long-term replacement for Harry Maguire at the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's back four.

This season, Victor Lindelof impressed on occasion but struggled for consistency, while Eric Bailly appeared in just 12 Premier League games.

A number of potential targets have recently been mentioned in connection with the Red Devils, including Real Madrid's Raphael Varane and Villarreal's Pau Torres, who will face United in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

DON'T MISS:

He has recently established himself as one of La Liga's best central defenders and is said to have a £50 million release clause in his contract, which the 20-time Premier League champions are willing to pay.

Despite this, Scholes believes his former club should pass on the opportunity in favor of a move for Marquinhos.

The 46-year-old told Webby and O'Neill that United could benefit from securing the Brazilian's services, but that PSG will not sell for anything less than a premium.

"I'd like to see a center-half come in next to Maguire," Scholes said. "I believe Lindelof is doing well; however, I believe well is insufficient to win a league.

"I think Marquinhos from PSG would be a fantastic center-half next to Maguire, but again, you're talking about a lot of money."

There has been no indication that United is actively pursuing Marquinhos ahead of the summer transfer window, but if the Red Devils decide to pursue him, they may face Premier League competition.

Chelsea is also looking to bolster their defensive ranks and has been linked with the PSG man since the turn of the year.

Tuchel is a known fan, lavishing praise on his former player while still in charge of the French team last year.

"Marquinhos is our team's heart and soul," the 47-year-old told reporters. "That is why he must be at the center of the action, but also because he is talented.

"He possesses all of the qualities required to play in midfield, as well as a worker's mentality. He can assist both the defenders and the forwards.

Because he is the boss, it is critical that he is close to everyone. Marqui covers more ground than anyone else on the team and is extremely useful in the counter-press.

"If Marqui is required to play at the back, he will, but he has demonstrated his ability in midfield. He has the ability to push the team to its maximum potential.

"Last season, he did it several times, most notably during the final eight [Champions League quarter-final] in Portugal. He netted goals against Atalanta and RB Leipzig. He is outstanding."
