Liverpool receive surprise Champions League boost as Manchester United change confirmed

The Manchester United match has been verified. Liverpool will visit Manchester United on Thursday after a new date for the rescheduled Old Trafford match was announced.

The clash between the bitter North West rivals will take place on May 13 at 8.15 p.m. Sky Sports will air it online.

 DON'T MISS:

The game was supposed to take place last Sunday, but it was canceled due to safety issues after several hundred United fans stormed Old Trafford several hours before kickoff to condemn their club's founders, the Glazer family.

With Liverpool and Manchester United taking up all of the available midweek and weekend times, and Premier League games needing to be completed on the planned final day of May 23 to avoid jeopardizing the race for European places, it was impossible to locate a new slot for the rearranged contest.

The problem was exacerbated by the Premier League's intention to ensure that any team plays at least one home game in front of fans following the relaxing of certain Government coronavirus limits on May 17.

As a result, United could now play two games in 50 hours, with the arrival of Liverpool followed by a home game versus Leicester City at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11.

 DON'T MISS:

One thing became apparent after the dust settled following Liverpool's delayed trip to Old Trafford and Manchester United's heated fan demonstrations, writes Theo Squires.

Dare we tell it, not playing this weekend has really benefited Jurgen Klopp's team?

Man City would have been proclaimed champions and would have been able to focus on their Champions League adventures if the Reds had defeated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to maintain their slim chances of placing in the top four intact.

After defeating Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, it won't be long before Pep Guardiola's men officially snatch Liverpool's title and can settle on Europe for the rest of the season.

However, since the Reds are not competing this weekend, City has a chance to take the championship as they return to league action on Saturday.

Who will be their next opponents? Chelsea hosts Liverpool at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, prior to Liverpool's night game with Southampton.

This season, City has become undisputed champions, having defeated practically all that stood in their way.

However, if a team had a shot to dethrone City, it would be in a dead rubber off the back of a Champions League semi-final second leg with the championship already secured.

Chelsea, of note, have their own Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid to brace for before traveling to the Etihad, and they have already qualified for the FA Cup final.

However, the Londoners face a tumultuous couple of weeks, with home games against Arsenal and Leicester City sandwiched between a cup final clash with the Foxes and a final-day ride to Aston Villa.
