Edinson Cavani has admitted that he is in better shape than he has ever been during his time at Manchester United.

The veteran striker has defied those who doubted his ability to perform at the highest level, scoring 16 goals in all competitions since joining United, convincing the club to offer him a contract extension.

Cavani has agreed to stay at Old Trafford until the end of the 2021/22 season. Following United's 1-1 draw with Fulham, he grabbed the headlines with an audacious chip that elicited joyous scenes among the returning fans inside Old Trafford.

The 34-year-old now believes he is in good enough shape to play in United's Europa League final against Villarreal in a week.

“I think I'm in decent shape, and I feel fit and confident in myself,” Cavani told United's internal media.

“I believe there is always something you can improve on, always something you can improve or sharpen up, even more, to help you maintain your highest level.

“To be honest, I didn't have an injury before coming here to United. I finished the game fairly well in terms of fitness and felt fine in the final PSG Champions League game I played in, against [Borussia] Dortmund.

"I believe the minor issue I had with my adductor when I first arrived here had more to do with readjusting to hard training after such a long break. But, yes, I am feeling good right now, full of desire to do well, eager to train hard, and yes, if possible, I will aim to get better and continue to improve. Certainly!”

Cavani also praised the return of fans, having played and scored in front of Manchester United fans for the first time ever on Tuesday night. With covid-19 restrictions finally lifted in the UK, fans have been allowed back into stadiums.

In a message to United fans, he added, "I'll do my best to ensure we can enjoy some happy moments together."

"So, I hope to see you all soon, and thank you very much for all the well wishes I've received throughout this difficult and complicated year for all of us, both on social media and from those around me.”
