Edinson Cavani discusses Roma scuffle and truth behind Mason Greenwood incident

Manchester United defeated Roma 8-5 on aggregate in the Europa League semi-finals, with top forward Edinson Cavani scoring four goals in the two legs.

However, there was another instance that did not include a target in which the Uruguayan endeared himself to the Manchester United fanbase.

DON'T MISS:

With 19 minutes left in the second leg in Rome and the score tied at 2-2, the 34-year-old hurried to the rescue of teenager Mason Greenwood, who was surrounded by opposing teams.

Greenwood got into a scrap with Roma's Gianluca Mancini, and the home team's defender Rick Karsdorp quickly jumped in to outnumber the United forward.

Cavani, who is rapidly becoming a United fan favourite, then dashed over to the incident to confront the Roma players and defend Greenwood.

The seasoned striker was booked for his troubles, but it was a testament to the team's solidarity and Cavani's relationship with his younger colleague, with whom he has established an offensive understanding.

DON'T MISS:

Cavani spoke on the event to Manutd.com, saying, "I've always claimed that I'm somebody who works really intensely in football."

“I'm out there on the field as part of a family to work tirelessly for the team and to try my bit for each and every one of the lads who go to make up our team.

When you're out there, I think you can defend and stick up for all of your teammates.

"Sometimes because of a lack of expertise on their side, and they can make a mistake."

"Many occasions, that is because you feel that a circumstance in which they are participating during a stand-off is simply unjust.

In that incident against Roma, I got the impression that he was fighting with the Roma defender face to face, which is something that can happen in football.

"The next thing you do, a third man appears on the scene and starts pushing him, despite the fact that he was obviously not included in the initial debate."

"I told him he shouldn't get involved in the incident, which is why I went to help Mason and offer him some protection."

“I also attempted to separate the players in order for the incident to calm down. We were in a crucial moment of the game, and he should have been sent off.

"I received a yellow card for my trouble, but the important thing was to cover and support him and try and keep things from going even more."
