Three positions Manchester United are now most likely to sign players this summer

Three positions Manchester United are now most likely to sign players this summer

Eric Bailly, a defender with Manchester United, signed a new deal last week.
The Ivorian's decision to stay relieves United of the need to sign a center-back this season.

One could still apply, but the position is less important. Instead, the remaining funds would almost certainly be invested elsewhere.

Here are three places that should be United's top targets this summer…

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

This is the most significant shift brought on by the Eric Bailly verdict. United does not need to spend money on a center-back.

Instead, the funds could be used to recruit a top defensive midfielder.

Nemanja Matic, 32, has taken a step back this season, starting just 10 Premier League games.

This has increased United's reliance on a duo of Fred and Scott McTominay, who many believe does not have adequate versatility.

The duo is successful together, but they combine to do the job of a single top defensive midfielder.

A truly elite player in the role would make for better balance, allowing Paul Pogba to return to a midfield two and allowing United to be more daring in major games.

Declan Rice, Ruben Neves, and Yves Bissouma are all possibilities.

RIGHT-WING

For years, United has been without a genuinely outstanding right-winger, and a signing here is long overdue.

Last summer, the club made several long-term transfers, signing Amad and Facundo Pellistri.

It remains to be seen if either will start games in the spot on a regular basis next season.

Mason Greenwood is successful in the spot, but he is viewed as a striker in the long run.

DON'T MISS:

This summer seems to be the ideal time to make a move for a player like Jadon Sancho.

Sancho would become a constant in the role, encouraging Amad to grow at his own speed rather than being pushed into it.

STRIKER

Since Anthony Martial took a significant move back this year, the striker job remains a source of real confusion at United.

Edinson Cavani's outlook is unclear, and he could return to South America.

This is a problem United must address, even though top goal Erling Haaland is too costly.

A short-term deal for Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the line is one wildcard choice.

Mason Greenwood will have a significant impact on the role next season as well, but he shouldn't be expected to do it all on his own.

If United decides to try cheaper offers at other positions, Harry Kane is another long-shot choice.
