‘VERY TALENTED’: ROONEY HAILS MANCHESTER UNITED STARLET WHO CAN ‘REALLY HURT’ OPPONENTS

Wayne Rooney praised Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong ahead of Derby County's match against Birmingham City.

Rooney reserved some nice words for Chong, who is presently on loan from United at Lee Bowyer's Blues, at his pre-match news conference yesterday.

Since making his first-team debut in 2019, the promising 21-year-old has spent three seasons away from Old Trafford.

Last season, he joined Werder Bremen and Club Brugge, but neither journey overseas yielded any unusual results.

Chong returned to Carrington ahead of the new season but was immediately dispatched to Birmingham.

Last month's 5-0 thrashing of Luton Town saw the agile attacker pick up a pair of assists and quickly endear himself to the Blues crowd.

His next assignment is to face Rooney's Rams at St. Andrew's tomorrow night.

          ROONEY'S OPINION

          “He's a good player,” remarked United's all-time leading scorer.

“He's a player who clearly moved to Germany last season, but things didn't work out for him there.

“Obviously, he's a very skilled player; he played against us in the preseason, and sure, he's an impact player with excellent moments in the game.

“Of course, we'll have to be careful of him and make sure we're alert and defending effectively against him because if we allow him time and space, he's a guy who can really damage you.”

When Chong made his debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team two years ago, Rooney was on another continent.

The Derby manager, who was stationed with DC United at the time, was likely to have heard rumblings about this budding prodigy through the academy.

United's current and former players are prepared for a fight in England's second tier, far from the promised land of the Premier League.

Both will want to reach the peak and enter the heavenly gates once more.

Getting Derby back into the top flight would be the stuff of Rooney's dreams; incredibly hazy dreams.

Meanwhile, Chong's ultimate objective is likely to be to frequently represent the Red Devils.

Impress in a Birmingham jersey, and the opportunity might be coming his way soon.
