This summer, Manchester United launched a €30 million proposal for Kalidou Koulibaly, who was eager to join the club.
This is according to journalist Carlo Nesti, who claims that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis turned down the offer.
Manchester United is rumored to be looking for a new central defender this summer in order to provide a long-term partner for Harry Maguire.
They've decided on Raphael Varane after reaching an agreement with Real Madrid to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford following years of speculation.
Varane has said his goodbyes to Madrid and his teammates, and the deal is expected to be completed soon.
Manchester United, on the other hand, had been linked to a number of other centre-backs in Europe, including Koulibaly, before the deal was completed.
He, like Varane, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for years, and Nesti claims that another attempt was made this summer.
“Luciano Spalletti is persuaded of the goodness of the people at his disposal and has embraced Aurelio De Laurentiis' proposal with conviction,” Area Napoli reports.
“However, there are two thorns that the coach must face and overcome. The first has to do with Kalidou Koulibaly. Manchester United has made a €30 million offer to Napoli.
“Aurelio De Laurentiis declined the English proposition, but the footballer stated that he was open to the thought of playing for such a prominent club.
“There could be some new Senegalese assaults on Napoli.”
