Man Utd receive unexpected transfer boost because of new Brexit rule

Man Utd receive unexpected transfer boost because of new Brexit rule

Due to a recent Brexit ruling, Manchester United could be one step closer to bringing in a new defensive signing this summer.

Manchester United's pursuit of Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier has been aided by an odd source — Brexit. With La Liga's restriction on British players having recently expired, Atletico will have to decide whether or not it is worthwhile to maintain hold of the England defender.

DON'T MISS:

Teams can only have three non-EU players in their squad, according to La Liga rules.

Given the recent uncertainty surrounding Brexit and its timeline, British players were exempt from this restriction for a period of time.

That term has ended as of the end of June, which means Spanish clubs must seriously consider signing British players in the future, or in Trippier's case, keeping them on.

Diego Simeone's side is currently fully booked with Renan Lodi, Felipe, and Trippier himself.

The side will be relieved that new signing Rodrigo De Paul has an Italian passport, allowing him to easily integrate.

They do, however, have Nehuen Perez and Santiago Arias in the wings, both of whom will have to leave the club, whether temporarily or permanently, if Trippier continues at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Simply put, if the Englishman stays in Madrid, it will be difficult for the Spanish hierarchy to find a place for their surplus non-EU players.

Allowing Trippier to depart, on the other hand, might benefit Atletico in some respects.

DON'T MISS:

Manchester United, who have been tracking the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder all summer, will definitely rejoice.

Rumours have intensified in recent days, with a £18 million deal being linked with the likely arrival of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Since joining Atletico Madrid in 2019, Trippier has been a great success, leading the club to the La Liga title last season and playing a key role in England's run to the Euro 2020 final.

As a result, Spanish publication AS claims that Simeone is desperate to return to Madrid for another season.

Regardless of the manager's opinion, if the proper offer comes in from Old Trafford, the board could put pressure on him, as the new EU-based law offers its own dilemma.

Trippier, who only came through Manchester City's academy down the road, is now in his thirties, and a return to his country will always be worth contemplating.

Despite the fact that Manchester had the highest percentage of ‘remain' votes in England's north-west, Brexit might be on the verge of delivering a world-class new right-back to United's doorstep, or at the very least playing a part in it.
