Man Utd backed to agree signing of £80million ‘specialist’

Man Utd backed to agree signing of £80million ‘specialist’

Manchester United must sign a natural defensive midfielder to replace veteran Nemanja Matic, who has spent much of his time on the bench under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In such a scenario, Paul Parker, a former Manchester United player, has encouraged the club to recruit Declan Rice from West Ham United.

The 56-year-old former defender told MEN:

“He (Rice) rarely gets booked because of the way he plays, the authority he exudes, and the fact that he nicks balls off people's toes. United don't have anyone like that, and the only one who can play is Nemanja Matic, who is getting on in years.”

The 22-year-old had a strong season with the Hammers, who will compete in the Europa League next season, and the youthful playmaker has been outstanding for England at Euro 2020. If England defeats Italy in the final on Sunday, he might become a European Champion.

If he chooses to transfer to Old Trafford, the 21-cap international will be able to play Champions League football, and MEN has previously reported that he is interested in joining Man Utd.

DON'T MISS:

Paulo Di Canio, a West Ham great, is a huge fan of the defensive midfielder. In an interview with talkSPORT, he said:

“He's a terrific individual since he's an expert in this midfield position.”

Lingard, a Manchester United player, was a big success for the Hammers (on loan) last season, and reports claimed he may be used in a deal to entice Rice, who is valued at over £80 million. However, Rice is not interested in such a trade (ESPN).

The holding midfielder is still under contract with the London club until 2024, and he is in excellent form, so he is unlikely to be available for a bargain. Should the Red Devils spend big money to sign him for next season, in your opinion?
