Manchester United identify him as potential Paul Pogba replacement

Manchester United are considering Leon Goretzka of Bayern Munich as a possible successor for Paul Pogba this summer, according to SportBild.

With the Bavarian giants for four seasons, the Germany international has 25 goals and 27 assists in 112 matches.

His contract has one year left on it, but Bayern has yet to make any progress in committing him to a new long-term contract.

Goretzka is open to extending his contract but believes his market value has improved as a result of his regular performances for the Bundesliga champions.

David Alaba was given a lucrative wage deal of roughly €19.5 million per year, but he turned down the free transfer to Real Madrid.

Both Joshua Kimmich and Goretzka regard the figure as a baseline for extending their contracts, complicating the talks.

Goretzka's status is being closely monitored by United. They see him as a possible successor for Paul Pogba, who is rumored to be on his way out.

Sportslens' point of view:

DON'T MISS:

Goretzka has had minor niggles during his time at Bayern, but when healthy, he has been a top performer on the field.

Last season, the 26-year-old scored eight goals and added nine assists in 32 appearances, mostly from a center midfield position.

His proclivity for making forward runs has resulted in consistent goal contributions. He's also a good defender with good placement.

Pogba's future at United is still up in the air, with his contract set to expire in June 2022.

Despite France's early withdrawal, he enjoyed a fantastic Euro 2020 campaign with them. The Red Devils intend to pay him a salary that will set a new club record.

If no progress is made in the coming weeks, they may be forced to sell him rather than risk losing him for free at the end of the year.

Goretzka's box-to-box ability might make him a perfect substitute, but his salary demands could be a stumbling barrier.

Transfermarkt values the midfielder at €70 million, but given his contract status, he could be available for considerably less.

However, the alleged salary demands of €373,000 per week may deter them from making an approach for the versatile midfielder.

In terms of earnings, this would put him just behind De Gea.

The wages are still less than the €465,000-per-week plan prepared for Pogba, and it remains to be seen how the club will continue
