Lewandowski beats Muller: 10 other great goalscoring records, featuring Ronaldo & Messi

On Saturday afternoon, the Bayern Munich striker set a new Bundesliga record by scoring his 41st goal of the season against Augsburg.

Gerd Muller's previous record of 40 goals in 1971/72 was thought to be unbreakable, especially given that teams only play 34 games in a single German top-flight season.

DON'T MISS:

But Lewandowski has now surpassed Muller, and he accomplished this extraordinary feat in only 29 games, which is simply unbelievable.

The record-breaking strike by the Polish international against Augsburg got us thinking about the other great goalscoring records set since the turn of the century.

So we scoured the archives and found ten more incredible records set by goal-getters in recent years.

To make things more interesting, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been limited to two each in our list.

Only records set by players in one of Europe's top five leagues were considered for inclusion.

  1. Lionel Messi has the most goals in a single season (73 in 2011/12).

It's a record that might never be broken. Messi scored 50 of Barcelona's 73 goals in La Liga in 2011/12, the most ever scored by a player in a single top-flight season.

DON'T MISS:

  1. Lionel Messi has scored in 21 straight La Liga games.

During his memorable La Liga run in 2012/13, the Argentine scored 33 goals against all 19 other La Liga teams. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner was truly playing football from a different planet.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo has the most goals in a single Champions League season (17 in 2013/14).

Ronaldo's record-breaking haul of goals came in just 12 games, with the Portuguese superstar scoring in every round of the competition to help Real Madrid win La Decima.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo is the player who has scored the most goals in the shortest amount of time for a single club (105 games)

Imagine being able to hit the ground running at one of the world's most prestigious clubs. To put this in context, the second-fastest player to 100 goals for a single club this century is Luis Suarez, who did it in 120 games for Barcelona.

  1. Jamie Vardy | Has scored in 11 straight Premier League games.

Vardy was having a great time in 2015/16. While his record of 11 games is less than Messi's, the Leicester man's achievement is more than deserving of a spot on this list, especially since no other Premier League striker has come close to matching his record since.

  1. Erling Haaland is the player who has scored the most Champions League goals in the shortest amount of time (14 games)

Haaland's Champions League performances have been nothing short of extraordinary. To emphasize how impressive the Norwegian's record is, Harry Kane is the second-fastest player in competition history to reach 20 goals, doing so in 24 games.

  1. Sadio Mane | Premier League hat-trick record holder (2 mins 56 seconds)

In May 2015, Mane scored a hat-trick for Southampton against Aston Villa in the time it takes most people to make a cup of tea.

  1. Real Madrid | Most goals scored in a single league season (121 in 2011/12)

Real Madrid were breathtakingly good in 2011/12 under Jose Mourinho. In La Liga, they averaged 3.18 goals per game, with three players (Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain, and Karim Benzema) scoring 20 or more times.

  1. Bruno Fernandes | Midfielder with the most goals in a season (28 goals and counting, 2020/21)

Fernandes has been absolutely sensational in 2020/21, and with two games left in Manchester United's season, the silky playmaker will almost certainly break Frank Lampard's previous record of 27 goals.

  1. Mohamed Salah | Most Premier League goals in a 38-game season (32 in 2017/18)

Salah's sensational debut season with Liverpool is one that most football fans - yes, even rivals - will never forget. In 2017/18, the Egyptian scored in 24 different Premier League games, another Premier League record.
