Manchester United's path to signing goalkeeper Tom Heaton is clear.
Heaton has been released by Aston Villa, according to the club's official website.
This was to be expected, and his contract is set to expire on June 30.
Heaton, 35, is expected to join Manchester United as a free agent on July 1.
Heaton has agreed to terms with Manchester United, according to the Mirror. This has not been confirmed, but The Telegraph previously reported that he was on the verge of doing so.
Heaton has responded to his departure from Villa Park by saying goodbye and thanking the club ahead of his next adventure, though he made no specific mention of his next move.
Heaton left United on a free transfer in 2010, much to Sir Alex Ferguson's chagrin, and his potential return 11 years later brings his career full circle.
His arrival provides United with additional depth in the event that either David de Gea or Dean Henderson leaves, which is highly likely.
Sergio Romero's contract is set to expire in June, and he has already returned to Argentina, while Lee Grant's contract is also set to expire in June.
Heaton's release from Villa clears the way for United to announce his impending arrival before the end of July if they so desire.
Heaton was approached by Liverpool, according to the Mail, but he preferred to stay with United.
