Bruno Fernandes' Man Utd demand - and what it says about Donny van de Beek

Bruno Fernandes' Man Utd demand - and what it says about Donny van de Beek

This season, Manchester United's player of the year has been Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal international midfielder has scored 27 goals and given 17 assists in 55 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

DON"T MISS:

United are in the midst of signing him to a fresh lucrative deal that would keep him at Old Trafford for the near future.

Fernandes is eager to pen contract deals with Manchester United, who are on track to finish second in the Premier League behind champions Manchester City this season.

And he seems to be joining Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani at the club for the upcoming season, two players whose careers have become unclear in recent months.

It's all looking good for Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has done an excellent job of improving Man United over the last two seasons.

However, according to The Sun, Fernandes wants United to make two crucial acquisitions this summer to ensure the team remains on course to challenge for the championship next season.

DON"T MISS:

Fernandes reportedly wants Solskjaer to sign a ball-playing centre back and a central midfielder capable of relieving him of defensive duties so he can express himself more in the attack.

Fernandes' idea makes common sense, but it's not a glowing affirmation of Donny van de Beek, who has been United's forgotten guy after only joining in a £35 million contract at the start of the season.

As the Dutchman joined United, there was a lot of hope.

After impressing in a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa, United favorite Rio Ferdinand was concerned that he could unsettle the Red Devils midfield and cut Pogba's playing time.

"Well, I guess that's the main concern," Ferdinand said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Listen, if you're trying to put the best players in that midfield then you're going to play three, you'd play Paul Pogba in the holding position and [Bruno] Fernandes and Van de Beek around him, a little more open and willing to move about and build.

"Is that the right role for Paul Pogba? No, I would disagree. However, you must consider what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wishes to do. Would he want his strongest talent on the field, or is he referring to players who can work into a system?

"That, I believe, is the most intriguing aspect of Man United's signing, the player, for me heading into the season.

"Is he only going to be called one of the team's strongest players and participate, or are we going to suggest we want the scheme for the players to fit into?

"It's a huge decision because it remains to be seen, but I do believe Manchester United will see some changes and acquisitions in this squad heading into the season."

Of course, Pogba was not limited in any way, and it has been Van de Beek who has struggled to find game time, implying that Solskjaer does not like the Dutchman in the keeping position.

If Solskjaer signs a new defensive midfielder on Fernandes' advice, it means that the Portuguese star does not like Van de Beek either.

A new midfielder will push the Holland international further down the pecking order at Old Trafford, almost certainly resulting in his departure.
