Man Utd board divided over a move for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer transfer target

Manchester United board disagree over the move to sign the Red Bull Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is willing to sign a fast center-back to assist Harry Maguire, which would help United to play a higher line next season and therefore increase the pressure on any of their opponents through a high press.

Upamecano, 21, is known to be one of the best prospects in the football world and his eye-catching style of play which he showcased in the last season Champions League Quarterfinals against Atletico Madrid back in August attracted the attention of many European clubs around the world.

However, Upamecano has been on the transfer list of Europe's elite for far longer than that, and United coach Solskjaer has suggested the Frances international as the club's next signing following the £40m acquisition of Donny van Beek from Ajax.

Although, from the Telegraph news, there is debate within Old Trafford whether United should press more in a move to sign the French international.

His club Leipzig values the player at around £60m but a clause in the player's contract means Upamecano can leave the club for around £40m next season, which will result in a significant decrease in these financially-challenging times in the world.

But some members of the Manchester United board have also raised some doubts about the player's willingness to sign for another club.

Although the ability of the player is not in question, Upamecano is still 21-year-old and some feel that the French international would benefit from at least another one full year in the Bundesliga outfit before making a move.

Man Utd coach Solskjaer must find a way to convince his board not to postpone the move to land the 21-year-old for another one year when the fight to get the signature of the Frenchman will be hotter than it is now.

Man Utd spent £30m to land both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly and, while neither has been a disaster, but they are considered top-level center-backs.

The board is therefore reluctant to spend money even more in a challenging climate for a defender may take up to three to four years until he is the real deal. Solskjaer is also experiencing a similar problem with his board over a move for Jadon Sancho.

The club is as one in their willingness to land the 20-year-old England international but not for his club's £108m valuation. instead, Man Utd is set to bide their time over the transfer window and test the German outfit's resolve late on with a lower bid for Sancho.
